Hide and Seek

Sometimes the most captivating photographic opportunities present themselves unexpectedly, without any prior planning or research. Such was the case with this particular image. I stumbled upon this scene while out on a leisurely stroll with my dog one early spring afternoon. Even without my camera in hand, the derelict outbuilding nestled beside the gently flowing stream instantly captivated me. It evoked a sense of nostalgia, transporting me back to my childhood days of playing hide-and-seek with friends.

I knew I had to return with my camera to capture the essence of this scene before the vibrant foliage of summer obscured its raw beauty. The bare branches and sparse vegetation of early spring provided the perfect backdrop, allowing the dilapidated structure to take center stage. I envisioned a long exposure shot that would not only blur the motion of the water, creating a sense of tranquility and timelessness, but also soften and streak the clouds across the sky, adding a touch of dynamism to the otherwise still scene.

Returning a few days later, armed with my camera and tripod, I carefully composed the shot, framing the outbuilding against the backdrop of the stream and the surrounding trees. The long exposure allowed me to capture the subtle details of the scene, from the weathered textures of the building to the gentle ripples in the water, while also achieving the desired ethereal effect in the sky.
