A narrow dirt path with wooden railings winds down a grassy cliffside toward Selwicks Bay in North Yorkshire, where white chalk cliffs meet calm sea waters at high tide during sunrise.

The Inviting Path

I’ve explored and photographed the area around the North Yorkshire village of Flamborough many times, and each visit offers something different. Its exposure to the wild, ever-changing moods of the North Sea and the dramatic tidal shifts of the British coast guarantees that no two photographs ever look the same—even if taken from the same spot. It’s one of those places I always make time for when I’m nearby.

This shot was taken on a late summer morning. I loved how the path draws your eye into what appears to be a calm, peaceful scene. But while it might look tranquil, it certainly didn’t sound it. These chalk cliffs are home to thousands of seabirds and several seal colonies—and when the sun rises, they don’t stay quiet about it.
